3-Pin vs 5-Pin DMX: What's the Difference?

ProAVL Team·20 February 20255 min read

The Short Answer

3-pin and 5-pin XLR connectors carry **identical DMX512 signals** on pins 1, 2, and 3. The only difference is that 5-pin XLR has two extra pins (4 and 5) which were originally reserved for a second DMX universe — a feature almost never used in practice.

Why Do Both Exist?

DMX512 was originally specified for 5-pin XLR. However, many manufacturers — especially DJ lighting brands — adopted 3-pin XLR because:

  • 3-pin XLR connectors are cheaper to manufacture
  • DJ gear already used 3-pin for audio, so components were shared
  • Smaller connectors fit more compactly in fixture housings
  • The result is an industry split where most professional theatrical and event fixtures use 5-pin, while most DJ and budget fixtures use 3-pin.

    Are They Interchangeable?

Electrically yes — signal-wise, completely identical. But they don't fit each other physically. You need an adapter.

    Which Terminator Do I Need?

You need to terminate with the same connector type as the last output port in your chain:

  • If the last fixture in your chain has a 5-pin DMX out: use a **5-pin terminator**
  • If it has a 3-pin DMX out: use a **3-pin terminator**
  • If there is no DMX through port: no terminator is needed
  • Pro Tips

  • **Always carry both types** of terminator. You'll encounter both on the same day.
  • **Label your adapters** — they are easy to leave behind.
  • **Do not use audio XLR cables** for DMX. They are wired identically but have lower impedance (50–75Ω vs the required 110Ω), causing reflections and signal corruption on longer runs.
  • ProAVL stocks both 3-pin and 5-pin terminators and both adapter directions — check our DMX Accessories category.
